"Self Portrait of the Artist"
oil on canvas, 12" x 16"
About the Artist, Suzanne MurphyDescribed as a contemporary realist, Suzanne illuminates her paintings with an impressionist's sense of light and shadow. Her canvases are mirrors reflecting a stillness of thought and a perception of beauty in ordinary moments and objects. Rich color and complex patterns resonate to hold the viewer's eye and create a heightened sense of place and time. Suzanne works in oils and acrylics on canvas and pastel on paper.
From a New York loft to a hand built strawbale studio and home in southern Colorado, Suzanne is now painting from her commercial studio and gallery on Florida's Gulf Coast. Suzanne considers herself a regional artist wherever she lives and has been newly inspired by both the serenity of Florida's beaches and the lushness of its greenscapes.
Suzanne began her career as a fashion illustrator in Kansas City where she studied at the Kansas City Art Institute. After moving to New York City in 1976, she attended the Art Students League of New York and worked as a graphic artist. Clients ranged from Macy's to theater companies like Chorus Line and Annie. She also found time to design a line of greeting cards for her own company, Famous Ink, Inc., which were marketed throughout New York City. After several semesters at the New York Forum of Stage Design, Suzanne worked as a costume designer. She credits the study of theatrical lighting as a basis for her use of light in her paintings. Suzanne has been painting exclusively as a fine artist since 1993.
